- North Star is owned and managed by an energetic and enlightened
free spirit, Moira O'Hanlon, whose two dogs are the unofficial greeters
and frog-pond dippers and rabbit chasers. She herself is an ex-Olympic
skier, raised partly in Switzerland, whose world travels have conferred
a sensitivity to the environment and a love for warm habitation, all of
which translates to a sharp sense of how to define hospitality. She is
invisible unless you drag her in for conversation. The place is a self-guided affair, private and informally
comfortable.
A dry living room opens through double glass doors into the wet
one, forty feet long, with its sunlight-hoarding clerestory and its
colonnade of pine masts and its thirty foot swimming pool, whose
antibacterial technology depends not on chlorine but on copper and
silver ions, hypoallergenic and odor-free. Alongside the pool, on the
native flagstone floor, a tropical indoor garden blooms, complementing
the one (beyond the forty feet of sliding doors and glass panels) along
the croquet lawn outside...where a hot tub beckons, and the cedar door
to an ever-available sauna, as well.
And I haven't yet described the bedrooms...tempurpedic mattresses
and pillows, rustic couches and settees, views out to magical mountains
surrounding Taos like a therapeutic blessing...
There is so much open space in the house that very large families could
gather, although when our daughter Tara joined us for lunch and
swimming, we prized the quiet which only such a private and commodious
place can possibly offer. And lots of medium priced restaurants are
within a quarter hour drive. Lemme stop, before you think I'm on
commission, which I'm not! (G&J S, New York)
